Woodbridge is a picturesque, riverside market town found on the coastal fringe of Suffolk and has a varied selection of shops, mostly small independent ones selling food produce, clothes, art, antiques, etc; pubs and restaurants as well as a pool, cinema, two small museums of local interest, a marina and railway station, some trains going directly to London.

The popular seaside towns of Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Felixstowe, Southwold, Dunwich and Walberswick are all within easy driving distance, as are the pretty period thatched cottages and ancient wool towns found further inland.
The A12, A14 and A140 link up the larger towns and cities of interest like Cambridge, Norwich and Ipswich. This part of Suffolk not only benefits from the coast and rivers but also has large expanses of woods, forests and heaths for walking and watching wildlife.
Deben Road is a residential cul-de-sac located off the Thoroughfare, the main street in Woodbridge town centre, yet is only about 2 minutes walk to the river and footpaths which lead to the countryside beyond. Thought to date from the mid 1800s, Colonel Kurtz’s Cottage is found at the river end of Deben Road and is one of the centre cottages in a row of four.

From the pavement, a stable door leads into the sitting room which benefits from the afternoon sun (hence the stable door so it can stream in!) but it can also be a cosy snug room on a winter’s evening in front of the fire. Three steps down from the sitting room brings you to a passage way which is currently shelved out under the stairs to accommodate CDs and a mini hi-fi. Off this passage way is the bathroom with a hand held telephone shower over the bath, WC, wash basin and a large fitted mirror fills where the old window used to be before there was a bathroom and the extension was built.

The kitchen has a cosy cottagey feel with fitted wall and floor units and space for an electric cooker, fridge/freezer and a table and chair. This is the heart of the house and where people seem to congregate as a glazed door links the kitchen to a good sized garden room which has a multitude of uses – the sofa opens out into a double bed to make it a bedroom (brilliant in the hot summer with the doors wide open all night!), a table opens up to make it a dining room, the table also makes it an office or the room is just a very pleasant, private second sitting room.

The small, fully enclosed garden is laid to york stone slabs and has a brick built shed (the old outside single seater WC) and a small wooden shed. There is space for a good sized table and chairs for alfresco eating. Although the garden faces north, it can get incredibly hot in the summer sun and is hardly overlooked despite being a centre terrace cottage. There is an outside cold water tap, a wall mounted halogen light and power cables serving low level lighting and a water feature.

Behind a door in the sitting room, a straight flight of stairs go up onto a good sized landing which has views of the river from the window, a built-in wardrobe with a cupboard over, a built-in book case and the airing cupboard.
Two steps lead up into the double bedroom with built-in floor and wall units in the recesses either side of the chimney breast. Looking out of the window, you can see the burial mound of Sutton Hoo on the other side of the river.
