WOODBRIDGE WANDER

Red LionFollow the footpath across the top of the park and then the lane running past an old water-pump on your right, until you emerge at Lime Kiln Quay Road. A spiked canon nestles at the side of the road, rescued from a sad fate as a street bollard anchored in concrete (a hint of Woodbridge’s military past, as is the statue of two drummer boys about 50m along Melton Hill.)

CanonFrom the canon ascend the gentle rise toward the crossroads; you’ll see the Red Lion pub on your left, St John’s Street and the unusual spire of the church ahead and Melton Hill to your right.

Drummer boyMelton Hill is said to be the inspiration for the song “The Grand Old Duke of York”.

Turn left at the Red Lion Pub, off Lime Kiln Quay Road and down the Thoroughfare, a central shopping spine of Woodbridge,

Dated beamcrammed with coffee houses, bookshops and all manner of goodies.

Lion's headAlong with the many inviting retail outlets are some intriguing architectural details, usually just above your natural eye line. As you stroll down the slope admire the proud red lion above the door of the pub and a little further along, on your left, the pretty Art Deco windows of Park House.

Carved beamAlmost directly opposite is an overhanging storey with dark beams, ornamented woodwork and the remainder of old gas light fittings. On the other side of the Thoroughfare is a moulded white, lion’s head above a door and a building dating from 1650, with beautifully intricate decorated wooden beams.

At the bottom of the slope, on the left, just past the Turban Centre and the Loaves and Fishes Deli, are two white, ornamental urns outside the first floor of Barretts.
